Sports Taping and Strapping
Sports taping is primarily used to support acute acute injuries and also to prevent injuries. The tape used is generally rigid or semi-rigid and so is generally applied before a sporting activity and removed again immediately afterwards.
Sports taping may also be used to help correct postural imbalances, to help with pain management (by limiting range of movement of a joint) and to decrease effects of inflammatory products.
Aims of Taping
-
Mechanical Support
- Limits abnormal or excessive movement whilst providing support to the joint or muscle that is compromised
- Supports ligaments and capsule of an unstable joint
- Support injuries to muscles or tendon units by compression and movement limitation
Reduce Instability - Tape can be used to support unstable joints for short time periods
- Support joints through warm up phase, once warm, joint control increases
- Limit extreme ranges of motion therefore increasing stability
Improve Proprioception
- Taping can partially correct impaired proprioception
- Taping can be used to improve postural control
The treatment process
Sports taping should be used in conjunction with a full treatment and rehabilitation programme, to ensure that inflammation is reduced and full function is restored (range of movement, strength and proprioception).
A consultation is required before taping – if the request is to tape a specific area of injury for an event then a half hour appointment should suffice to complete the consultation, understand the injury and the support required and apply the tape.
Please select sports taping – pre event as the option when booking.
If Sports taping would help with rehabilitation of an injury that is being treated already, this will be suggested as part of the sport therapy treatment.
